what i wish i knew before climbing kilimanjaro


Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an amazing feat, and one that should not be taken lightly. There are a few things you should know before attempting to summit the tallest mountain in Africa.

First and foremost, you need to be in good physical shape. This does not mean that you need to be an athlete, but you should at least be able to hike for several hours at a time. You will also need to be prepared for extreme weather conditions, as Kilimanjaro can be very cold and very windy.

It is also important to have the right gear. Make sure you have proper clothing and footwear, as well as enough food and water to last you throughout the journey. And finally, be sure to acclimatize yourself before attempting to summit Kilimanjaro. This means spending some time at a lower altitude (such as in a nearby town) before starting your ascent.

What to Pack

When packing for your Kilimanjaro climb, keep in mind that you will be carrying everything you need on your back. The key is to pack light, but also to pack smart. You will want to bring items that are essential and will help you during your climb. Here is a list of items that you should consider packing for your Kilimanjaro climb.


What you wear on your climb will, to a large extent, be dictated by the time of year you are climbing. Generally speaking, you will need a mixture of both warm and cool weather clothing, as there can be a big temperature difference between the lower and upper reaches of the mountain. However, even in the middle of winter, you are likely to perspire heavily when exerting yourself, so it is important to wear clothes that will wick away moisture and keep you as dry as possible. In terms of specific items, we would recommend the following:

-A base layer of synthetic materials (such as polypropylene) to wick away moisture
-A second layer of fleece or wool for warmth
-A waterproof and windproof outer layer
-Hiking boots that are comfortable and broken in
-Several pairs of socks (wool or synthetic materials)
-Gloves or mittens
-Hat or hood


Check the weather forecast for your destination and pack appropriate clothing. If you’ll be hiking, you’ll need sturdy shoes and, if you’re going to be in the wilderness, long pants to protect against bugs. Bring a hat or sunglasses if you’ll be in the sun.

If you’ll be camping, you’ll need a tent, sleeping bag and other camping gear. If you’re renting gear, reserve it in advance.

Pack any medications you take on a regular basis, as well as first-aid supplies such as bandages and allergy medicine.

The Hike

I wish I knew how beautiful and life changing the hike would be. The views from the top of Kilimanjaro are some of the most breathtaking I have ever seen. I would recommend this hike to anyone who is looking for an adventure.


The hike begins at the north end of the parking lot, near the information kiosk. Head north on the wide, well-marked trail. After a few minutes, you’ll come to a fork in the trail. Stay to the left to continue on the main trail. The trail will wind through some woods and then come out into an open field. At this point, you’ll have a good view of the valley to the east. After a few more minutes of walking, you’ll come to another fork in the trail. Stay to the right this time and follow the signs for “The lookout.” The trail will head uphill for a short distance before leveling off. You’ll soon come to a set of stairs leading up to the lookout tower. Climb the stairs for a breathtaking view of the valley!


Getting in shape for your hike is essential to having a good time. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Start slow and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your hikes.
  • Wear comfortable, broken-in shoes or boots that provide good support.
  • Pack plenty of food and water, and take breaks often to rest and refuel.
  • Be prepared for changing weather conditions by dressing in layers.
  • pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of potential hazards.
    All in all, I had an incredible experience climbing Kilimanjaro.would I do it again? Probably not. It was tough, both mentally and physically, but I’m glad I did it. I learned a lot about myself and what I’m capable of. If you’re thinking of climbing Kilimanjaro, go for it! Just be sure to do your research, train properly, and don’t forget to enjoy the views from the summit.
